Role in Florida’s Economic Development System
The Florida Small Business Development Center Network serves as the statewide single point of contact for the advancement of an entrepreneurial environment; thus, creating a positive foundation for the development and growth of micro, small and medium enterprises in Florida. The Network’s focus on the critical needs of businesses drives its direction and performance expectations. The Florida SBDC program is the most experienced economic development network serving Floridians statewide.
History of the FSBDC Network
The FSBDC Network is one of eight original SBDC pilot programs funded in 1976 by the U.S. Small Business Administration to successfully link the state’s education system to community outreach to aid in the development and education of the state’s entrepreneurs and small business community. Starting with only two centers in the first year of operation, by 2004 the FSBDC Network has grown to a statewide network of 33 centers involving seven of ten universities and seven community colleges. Additional outreach is provided at approximately 60 circuit rider locations, utilizing resource partners such as chambers of commerce, economic development councils, banks, etc.
